Welcome and happy 2014!
It’s hard to believe that it’s been nearly three years since the first 44 was released. I still remember that long, cold winter, sitting by the fire with my computer and writing that book. It was such a magical time, heavy snow falling outside while the characters came alive inside my head.
So here it is, the middle of winter in 2014, nine books later, and I’m still here watching snow fall and writing about Abby Craig. It’s been a dream, writing full -time and having so many fans of the series all over the world. More than half a million of you have downloaded the first book. It’s mind blowing!
I love these characters like family and now even have trouble remembering that time before Abby, Jesse, Kate, Ty, and David. It gives me serious shivers thinking that so many people have welcomed them all into their own lives.
One question I get asked is where the idea came from for the 44 series. And the answer is I don’t really know. There were a few things that happened back in that winter. I was in the shower one morning and heard a very clear voice in my head that said, “I know I’m lucky.” I was writing a different, lighthearted story at the time and knew that whoever had just spoken that line was not from there. She was definitely someone else. This voice belonged to a young woman, very serious, and lost in a deep sadness. I could feel that something terrible had happened to her. I dried off and ran to my notebook and wrote down that line.
There was also the component of wanting to write about Bend. I had moved here with my family (including my orange lion cat) several years prior and fell in love the small city in Central Oregon. And I wanted to write about the surrounding beauty, how the river flows through the town, how snowfall looks as it blankets the trees, how everything turns bright white after a blast of freezing fog. How different things were in the summer, when you can float the river, dangle your feet in a stream, hike along a trail that will take you to the base of those majestic mountains.
So that's how the 44 series was born: With one line, a sad, lonely protagonist, and a beautiful, complex setting.
And truth be told, I’m the one who feels lucky right alongside Abby Craig. Thanks so much to all of you avid readers of the series. You’ve helped make this journey incredible!
